It has been nearly two decades since art in Bilbao dressed itself in titanium. Volumes and perspectives, sinuous curves, plays of light and color… The building, designed by Frank Gehry, is a magnificent example of the most avant-garde architecture of the 20th century and provides a captivating backdrop for the exhibition of art.
The artistic program is conceived as a unique experience, based on varied presentations of its Permanent Collection and on temporary exhibitions. Added to this are the colossal sculptures of The Matter of Time, Richard Serra’s most significant sculptural ensemble, of an unprecedented scale and ambition in modern history.
The Permanent Collection of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao integrates the holdings of all Guggenheim institutions. In this way, the works of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao form one of the most interesting ensembles of modern and contemporary art. Each Guggenheim institution has a collection that is unique and complementary to the others. This particular feature underpins a distinctive museum model. Sharing holdings with the other Guggenheim Collections and exhibiting them on a rotating basis allows the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to present multiple perspectives on 20th- and 21st-century art, giving its Permanent Collection a distinctive dynamism and quality that have been consolidated over the years.
