The basilica in which the Virgen de Begoña, the patron saint and spiritual figure of Vizcaya, is revered is situated on top of a hill which dominates Bilbao, and which can be reached from the Old District on foot or by taking the lift which leaves from Calle Esperanza. The Gothic designed church is from the 16th century, set in an extensive park, which has inherited the site and name of the former Echevarria ironworks, of which only a testimonial chimney remains.
