In 1272, Alfonso X of Castile, 'the Sage', granted the town its charter. As of this date, Artziniega acted as a mediator between the commercial activity of Castile and of overseas, hosting weekly or important cattle fairs, making it a true mediaeval city. Its old district has been classified by the Basque Government as a Monumental Site. Its Ethnographic Museum is particularly worth visiting.
