The Guevaras were one of the noble families of Euskadi. In the town which bears their name, they first constructed a castle (in the 11th century) on top of a hill. Centuries later, in the 14th century, Guevara Palace was built at the bottom of this hill.
However, tragedy razed these buildings to the ground, killing their inhabitants during the second Carlist War. Both were besieged and completely destroyed. This site remained empty for many years, although recently the palace has been partially reconstructed.
