BEYOND EUSKADI'S TOP-TIER HIGHLIGHTS (I)

Are you coming to Euskadi for a few days of vacation? Whether it’s your first time or you’ve been before, we propose a range of distinctive plans whether you’re traveling as a couple, with family, with friends, or solo. In Euskadi, there are activities for every taste—and beyond our top-tier resources (which we definitely recommend you discover too).

Couples’ plans

A vineyard sunset, a “bath without water,” and a rural gastronomic experience with local produce are three great plans you can enjoy with your partner. Read on to find out where.

Rioja Alavesa, in the province of Araba, is the perfect place to get lost among vines, explore subterranean wine cellars still active in many villages, and taste wines made the artisanal way. But that’s not all: you can also delve into the megalithic past, wander medieval villages, and soak up local stories and legends.

And how about a bath… without water? In Enkarterri (Bizkaia province), you can enjoy a “forest bath,” an experience defined by silence and communion with nature. Plus, this part of Euskadi has a lot to tell about its Indian-style manor houses, industrial heritage tied to iron and mining, and one of our most traditional garments: the txapelas.

If you’re looking for a local gastronomic experience, head to Goierri in Gipuzkoa—the “Idiazabal territory.” But “man does not live by cheese alone”: the weekly markets in Goierri are a real explosion of colors and flavors, where local baserritarras sell the best from their gardens. Want to know more about Goierri? The so-called “Basque Highlands” offer routes and trails through its natural parks, greenways, and Camino de Santiago stages.

Family and group plans with children

If you thought beaches in Euskadi were only on the coast, here’s a surprise: in the Llanada Alavesa, around the Ullibarri‑Ganboa reservoir, you can enjoy a day at inland beaches Landa and Garaio north and south. These three interior beaches have Blue Flag status and are a perfect getaway to enjoy the scenery and take a dip. This reservoir is the main drinking water source for Araba and Bizkaia and has become a wetland of very high environmental value.

In the Uribe region (Bizkaia), we invite you to discover part of our mythology, with characters such as Olentzero and Mari Domingi (who bring gifts on the night of the 24th), Basajaun, Tartalo, or Mari. You can meet them at Landetxo Goikoa farmhouse, the oldest in Bizkaia, within Izenaduba Basoa (Izenaduba Forest). You can also head to nearby coastal villages and enjoy their beaches after visiting the WWII defensive bunkers in Gorliz—a visit well worth it.

On the coast of Gipuzkoa, explore maritime past and present in Pasaia (Oarsoaldea region). Learn how whaling ships were built, and enjoy stories and legends about Basque maritime activity in the 16th century. Plus, climb aboard a tuna boat converted into a floating museum about artisanal fishing and ocean conservation.

Solo traveler plans

Izki Natural Park, in the Alava Mountains, is perfect if you’re seeking peace and closeness to nature. You can hike through incredible landscapes and, if your visit coincides with an astronomical event, participate at its observatory. And don’t forget your binoculars if you're into birdwatching! Izki is part of “Birding Euskadi,” a project that promotes respectful tourism.

Continuing with protected areas, we take you to the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve—a place of beautiful beaches surrounded by cliffs, hidden villages preserving tradition and essence. Among the various plans, take a walk through Oma Forest and the Santimamiñe caves, both in Kortezubi and close to the San Pedro de Atxarre and San Miguel de Ereñozar viewpoints.

Picture: Sanctuary of Arantzazu (Nekatur)

To disconnect and find your own inner self, nothing better than the Arantzazu Sanctuary in Debagoiena—final point of the “Route of the Three Temples” (Sanctuary of Loyola in Azpeitia, the Hermitage of La Antigua in Zumarraga, and the Arantzazu Sanctuary). Upon arrival, you’ll be struck by the façade’s sculptures of the 14 apostles by Jorge Oteiza, the iron doors by Eduardo Chillida, and interior paintings by Néstor Basterretxea. In addition to its grandeur, visiting Arantzazu Sanctuary is well worth it thanks to its location in the heart of Aizkorri‑Aratz Natural Park, whose park office is just a few meters away.

Need to rest and recharge after all these plans? Don’t worry: the rural accommodations associated with Nekatur are awaiting you! Staying in our agrotourisms, country houses, or rural tourist apartments isn’t just sleeping—it’s living a 100 % Euskadi experience.
