Located to the south of the historic territory of Álava, Samaniego is at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria mountain range, very close to La Rioja, and is one of the 15 municipalities which make up the La Cuadrilla de Laguardia-Rioja Alavesa.
It is one of the stops we should make to complete the famous wine route. The wine cellars and vineyards provide the characteristic landscape of this land. In order to taste such a valued drink, we shall visit the numerous wine cellars dotted around this town, where we will get to know the entire culture which surrounds this drink.
The urban part of Samaniego, which is similarly well conserved, is also worth visiting. Going around its streets we will be drawn to the Church of La Asunción, which was, in its origins in the 15th century, a fortress. We can contemplate its Baroque doorway and, inside, the Churrigueresque style major altarpiece. Also worthy of note is the Samaniego Palace, an ancestral home from the 17th century, whilst on the outskirts, we can visit the beautiful hermitage of La Virgen del Valle.
